Dr. Murielle Hladik and Yosuke Yamaguchi (Master & Japanese Gardener)<\/p>\n
This elective is dedicated to Japanese gardens and landscapes. Our journey \nthrough the art of garden history begins with certain types of gardens, where \nthe viewer perceives the scenery from a boat (chisen-sh\u016by\u016b (\u6c60\u6cc9\u821f\u904a), from \na villa or while walking along a garden path. These gardens are meticulously \ndescribed in the Secret Book of Gardens, the Sakutei-ki, which was published \nin the 11th century. Another section of the course is dedicated to the dry Zen \ngarden (Karesansui\u3000\u67af\u5c71\u6c34) and follows the line of evolution from the first \nthoughts of the monk Mus\u014d Soseki (1275-1351) to the latest Zen gardens. \nJapan has a culture of temporality bound materiality, in which the design of \nbuilt artefacts incorporates process of ageing or gradual decay and processes \nadopted from the realm of gardening. Where perishable material and \nprecarious structures selected, objects take on a chronic fragility, deliberate \nephemerality. Gardens are popular settings for temporal experiments. As an \nart form. Working with transitory materials, a garden requires a continuous \ncare and attention. All landscape and art gardening are built on the judicious \nuse of time as a factor of design. \nParticular attention will be paid to spatial terms such as \u2018en\u2019 (\u7e01) and \u2018ma\u2019 (\u9593), \nwhich emphasise to the relationship between inside and outside. The \nknowledge gained through a series of four lecture will be applied in the clay \ngarden in Aachen-Seffent over the course of two garden workshops. For the \nsecond workshop in July 2024, we invited the gardener Yosuke Yamaguchi \n(coming from Nagasaki, Japan), who taught to the students Japanese \ngardening techniques. The purpose of this elective course was to create \ncollectively a small Japanese garden.<\/p>\n<\/div>
